Description

No. 2 Thorn Cottages is a small house that dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with an asbestos slate roof and features an axial stack with a rendered shaft. The layout consists of two rooms and a through passage, with a hall to the left that has a stack backing onto the passage, and an unheated lower end room that is divided into two. The house may have originally extended further on the left side.

The exterior has been modernized and presents a symmetrical three-bay front with late 20th-century plastic windows and a door. Inside, the left-hand room showcases rich carpentry details, including a chamfered stopped crossbeam and chamfered, jewel-stopped joists. There is an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel and a brick-lined bread oven. The lower end room features a rough chamfered axial beam. Although access to the roof apex was not possible during the survey in 1987, it is noted to be of side-pegged jointed cruck construction, which could indicate a late medieval origin. This cottage is part of a closely spaced row of 17th-century and earlier houses in Combeinteignhead, positioned end on to the street.
