Description
East Downe Farmhouse is an early 19th-century farmhouse, with a datestone in the back wall inscribed TM 1826. It is constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings made from local 'marble'. The building features a roof with two parallel spans, both covered in slate and having stone-coped gables, with a brick chimney-stack on each gable. The layout is a double-depth plan with front and back stairs in the center and two rooms on either side; the left-hand rear room on the ground floor was formerly the dairy, while the right-hand rear room served as the kitchen. There is an original lean-to storehouse on the right-hand side.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a single-storey lean-to and a symmetrical front that has three widely spaced windows. The windows have flat heads, with voussoirs and jambs made of 'marble'. All windows feature eight-pane barred timber sashes without horns, except for the central window, which has six panes per sash. The central doorway has a slightly projecting, rendered surround with a round-headed moulded architrave decorated with vermiculated blocks. The six-panelled door has the two lowest panels flush and is deeply recessed with panelled reveals. Each side of the doorway is flanked by a decorative wing wall with a swept parapet, which contains a blind window. The right-hand wall conceals the original lean-to.
On the left-hand gable wall, in the ground storey, there is a re-used 15th or early 16th-century wooden window with two chamfered lights and four-centred heads. Inside, the farmhouse features a wood staircase with square-section balusters, two simple early 19th-century marble chimneypieces, and some window shutters at the back with ovolo-moulded panels. This farmhouse exhibits some architectural pretensions and is of a quality that is rare in this locality.
