Description
Merryfield House is a late 18th or early 19th century house, originally occupied by the curate of Woodland and possibly built as his residence. It is constructed of stone rubble, originally with a rendered finish, and has slate roofs. Brick chimney stacks are located in the left-hand gable and on the roof ridge, off-centre to the right. The house has an L-shaped plan, with a single-storey addition to the rear. The front facade has three windows and a central doorway with flanking pilasters and a wooden entablature. The doorway has panelled reveals and a six-panelled door; the lower two panels are flush, and all panels have a raised margin moulding. A patterned fanlight is above the door. The upper sashes of the windows on the second storey retain their original 8 panes, while the lower sashes on the ground storey have 12 panes, and all are barred sashes. The left-hand wing, at the rear, has one window in each storey of the outer face, both with original 8-paned barred sashes. At the rear of the main range, a tall, round-headed stair window with glazing bars is visible. The interior is assumed to contain a wooden staircase with thin, square-section balusters, though it has not been inspected.
