Description

Peacock Cottage is a 17th-century cottage, likely originally part of Trelawn. It has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The construction is colourwashed rendered cob and stone, with some brick, and it has a thatched roof with gabled ends. A stack is located on the front, while a rear stack has been dismantled. The rear block was possibly the lower end kitchen of an earlier 17th or older house, with an impressive late 16th or 17th-century fireplace featuring a chamfered step-stopped lintel, stone jambs, and a bread oven. It has a one-room plan, and was seemingly connected to Trelawn until the late 1940s. The front block also has a single-room plan but is roofed at right angles to the rear block and was likely a service wing, constructed in the 18th century. The main entrance is in the gable end of the front block, with a 20th-century lean-to porch supported by posts. There’s a 20th-century timber casement window on the ground floor. The right return has 20th-century casements to the first and ground floors, and a doorway into the gable end of the rear block. Both ground floor rooms contain chamfered crossbeams, characteristic of the 18th century, while the front room has a plain 19th-century chimney piece. Straight principal rafters are visible under the roof. The cottage is part of a group in East Town, previously on the main road through Kenton, and is now located behind a 20th-century housing estate.
