Description

This pair of cottages, located about 25 metres north-west of Higher Farm, likely originated in the late 17th century, with the left end remodeled in the 18th century. They are constructed of rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a slate roof that is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right end. The cottages feature a projecting stack at the left end and two rear lateral stacks.

The plan consists of a single depth main range that is three rooms wide, with a passage to the left of centre leading to a stair at the rear, which is accessed from the left-hand room. There is also a narrow unheated service room at the right end. This layout may represent an adaptation or remodeling of a 17th-century three-room and passage plan, with the lower end to the left. A thick cross wall separates the two larger right-hand rooms, suggesting possible rebuilding or addition at the right end.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical window arrangement of three on the left and two on the right, with the first-floor window on the right being blind. The left-hand cottage has three windows and a central 19th or 20th-century plank front door, which is sheltered by a horizontal porch hood with a decorated canopy. The right-hand cottage features a 19th or 20th-century plank front door at the extreme right. The windows are mostly 19th or 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, except for one that is a late 20th-century replacement.

Inside, the left-hand room contains a 17th-century chamfered scroll-stopped crossbeam. The 18th-century stair rises in the rear right corner and features a winder with a wide straight flight above the passage. The rear lateral stack of the centre room is partly concealed by the left-hand partition, and there is evidence of a plank and muntin screen on the right-hand wall, which is covered by wallpaper. The left-hand cottage retains some 18th-century two-panel doors and one door with fielded panels. The right-hand cottage has a plain interior with no exposed carpentry, and a winder stair with a straight flight rises from within the service room at the right end. The roof was only inspected at the right-hand end and features A-frames. The cottages have group value with Higher Farm.
