Description

The base of an old market cross is located approximately 8 meters north-east of St Leonard's Tower in Newton Abbot. It is reported to be medieval but is likely from the 17th century. The base is a stepped octagonal structure made of granite, standing about one meter high and measuring 2 meters across, topped with a shallow pointed cap. An inscription on the north-east side states: "THE FIRST DECLARATION OF WILLIAM PRINCE OF ORANGE THE GLORIOUS DEFENDER OF THE LIBERTIES OF ENGLAND WAS READ ON THIS PEDESTAL BY THE REV JOHN REYNEL RECTOR OF THIS PARISH ON 5 NOVEMBER 1688."
