Description
This building is a barn located about 50 metres southwest of Great Englebourne, likely originally constructed as stables in the early to mid 17th century. It has been used as a cider house and is now functioning as a barn. The structure features finely coursed slate with slate dressings, a chamfered slate plinth, and eaves. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate and is half-hipped, topped with early crested ridge tiles.
The barn has a rectangular plan with a central entrance and a hay loft above. It is two storeys high, featuring a wide central doorway with a timber lintel doorframe and plank doors. There is one window on each floor on the left and right sides. The left-hand window has moulded timber frames with three lights, an outer chamfer, and an inner ogee mould with ogee mullions; however, the ground floor mullions have been replaced with square section mullions. The ground floor left-hand window also has a slate hood-mould. The right-hand windows have timber frames with some square mullions removed.
Below the eaves, there are two rows of pigeon holes, with a chamfered slate ledge beneath the centre of the lower row. At the rear left-hand (higher) end, there is a first-floor loading door with an old chamfered timber frame featuring carpenter's mitred joints. Inside, the barn is floored only at the higher (north) end and has chamfered beams with step stops. The roof includes collars that are halved and pegged to the face of the principals.
