Description
This listing describes a pair of gate-piers and an adjoining garden boundary wall located to the west and southwest of Sanders. The structures date from the early 19th century, although the bases and ball finials of the gate-piers may be from the 18th century. The gate-piers are constructed of slate rubble with granite dressings and feature a wrought iron gate.
The long garden wall runs along the boundary with the road to the west of Sanders. At the southern end, the wall curves back to a gateway that includes a pair of tall square gate-piers with cyma-moulded granite bases and square granite caps topped with ball finials. The flanking walls are curved and have terminal piers. The 19th-century wrought iron gate has six bars, cross-bracing, and scrolled stiles over the top rail.
At the northern end, there is a pair of tall plain slate rubble gate-piers with pyramidal caps, along with a 19th-century wrought iron gate. The wall continues to the north of this gateway as a kitchen garden wall, which is even taller in this section.
