Description

This is a threshing barn located approximately 30 meters to the northeast of Court Barton, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The barn features slatestone rubble walls with some cob at the top in places and has a corrugated iron roof that is hipped at the lower end and half-hipped at the higher end. It has a large rectangular plan, measuring 14 bays long, and includes two threshing floors, one at the center and another at the lower end. There is a leanto structure built in front of both long walls, likely from the 18th or 19th century.

The barn is single storey, with the western elevation featuring a leanto in the center that incorporates a porch for the wide cart entrance on the left-hand side. Another cart entrance is located at the lower end. The rear elevation has outshuts along its length. Inside, the original roof remains over the higher left-hand end of the barn, consisting of substantial principal rafters, some of which are slightly curved at the feet, with one having a curving strut morticed onto it that extends partly down the walls. The apex is morticed, and there are threaded purlins. Although the original cellars have been removed, evidence of halved and dovetailed collars on the principals is still present. At the lower end of the barn, the roof timbers were likely replaced in the 18th century. This barn is significant due to its large dimensions for Devon and its early date, and it is situated in one of the few unspoilt farmsteads in the area.
