Description
The doorway adjoining the northeast corner of Black Hall is a Grade II listed feature, originally part of a house and now serving as a garden gateway. It dates back to 1651 and is made of granite. The doorway is wide and features a roll-moulded segmental arch with jambs. The spandrels are intricately carved with a scroll or arabesque design. Above the doorway, there is a small coat of arms and the date 1651, all framed by a label adorned with flowers carved in the stops. This doorway is set into a garden wall next to the northeast corner of Black Hall. From the mid-17th century, Black Hall was the residence of the Fowells family from Fowellscombe, their primary seat located in Ugborough parish, which is now in ruins. In 1815, Black Hall was sold to Hubert Cornish, who constructed the current house and incorporated this doorway from the old structure.
