Description
No. 8 The Quay is a shop and house built around 1900 on a property dating back to the late 16th century. The building is constructed of painted brick with stone or stucco dressings, and it features a rendered brick chimney stack on the left party wall. The roof is probably slate and is hidden behind a parapet.
The building is narrow and faces the street, standing four storeys tall. The ground floor has a timber shop front with a central recessed doorway and a secondary doorway on the right side. The inner corners of the shop front are adorned with slender turned mullions that have moulded caps and decorative outer corner brackets. Above the shop front, there is a plain fascia, and the shop front and first floor are slightly recessed behind flat flanking pilasters.
At the first-floor level, Ionic capitals sit above diminishing blocked pilasters, and pairs of shaped brackets support panelled pedestals for obelisk finials. A similar design appears at the second-floor level, where a moulded cornice runs above a full-width, full-height window featuring a pattern of large curving glazing bars around a central broad curving bay window with folding casement windows.
The second floor has a shallow bay containing a tripartite sash window under a moulded timber cornice, with a central 12/1-pane sash and flanking 6/1-pane sashes, all of which have lower sashes under segmental-arch heads. The third floor features a pair of 9/1-pane sashes. The building is topped with a plain parapet that has an ornamental cast-iron crest.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
