Description

No. 9 The Quay is a shop and house built around 1870-1880 on a property that dates back to the late 16th century. The building features painted brick with stone or stucco dressings, and it has a rendered brick chimney shaft with pots on the right party wall. The roof is likely slate and hidden behind a parapet.

This narrow, four-storey building faces the street and has a single-window range. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front situated between original end panelled pilasters, which are stuccoed with fluted lower sections below formalised vases of flowers and Corinthian capitals. A stuccoed canted bay with a hipped roof extends through the first and second floors. The first-floor windows have moulded imposts and segmental-headed arches with keystones beneath a moulded cornice, while the second-floor windows feature low triangular heads under a moulded eaves cornice with a peardrop frieze. Each floor has horned sashes with shaped heads and no glazing bars.

On the third floor, recessed windows are set within outer triangular-headed arches that are enriched with nailhead ornament and contain horned 9/1-pane sashes, with the lower ones having segmental-arch heads. The moulded eaves cornice includes a peardrop frieze, and there is a parapet above. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
