Description

This shop and house dates from approximately 1870 to 1880, built on a site with earlier origins from the late 16th century. The building is constructed of painted brick with a chimney stack in the shared party wall, featuring a rendered brick chimney shaft and decorative pots. It has a slate roof with crested ridge tiles.

The building is narrow, with its end facing the street. The three-story structure has a single window front. The ground floor retains an original timber shop front, with a two-light shop window to the right. A recessed area contains the back entrance to the house and a shop door on a canted right side; both have 20th-century part-glazed doors with overlights (the house overlight is blocked). A 20th-century shop sign obscures the original fascia, although the mechanism for operating it remains visible, supported by corbels cast as female heads with leafy headdresses.

A canted bay with a hipped roof rises through the first and second floors, decorated with applied timber framing featuring cross braces and horned sash windows lacking glazing bars. Decorative horizontal bands of nailhead ornament are present at the second-floor window sill and cornice levels, with a similar band projecting at the eaves, supported by stepped brick corbels. The front of the roof is hipped and includes a dormer with a sash window and a deep, gabled roof supported on shaped timber brackets held by cross braces. The dormer is topped by an ornamental wrought-iron finial.

The interior has not been inspected. The building is included on the list for its group value.
