Description

No. 5 The Quay is a shop and house that likely dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 1890s, situated on property that dates back to the late 16th century. The building is constructed of Flemish-bond red brick, featuring painted stone or stucco dressings. A rendered brick chimney shaft with pots is located in the right party wall, and the roof, probably slate, is hidden behind a parapet.

The building is narrow and stands three storeys tall with attics, presenting a one-window range. The ground floor features a timber shop front from the 1890s, with a doorway to the left of a two-light shop window and a plain fascia. To the right, there is a stone pilaster with an unusually large fluted stone bracket supporting a wide moulded cornice that extends over the contemporary shop front of the adjoining property.

On the upper floors, paired central sash windows are located under flat brick arches. All windows are 6/1-pane sashes, with the lower ones being much shorter than those above. A plat band at the second-floor level is positioned between painted pilasters, leading up to a moulded cornice above a peardrop frieze. The painted parapet is interrupted by a gabled dormer that contains a 2/2-pane sash window. The roof has a hipped front end. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
