Description
No 4, including stables adjoining immediately to the west, is a house in a row that was formerly a village farmhouse and stables, dating from around the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of stuccoed stone rubble and features a slate roof with a gabled end and raised eaves. The original layout likely consisted of a three-room and through or cross passage plan, with a lateral stack at the rear of the hall and an axial stack for the inner room. There is a later cartway that has been broken through at the lower end and a later extension at the rear. The building has two storeys and an irregular four-window range, with late 19th century and 20th century two and three-light casements that include glazing bars. A flush panel door is located to the left of centre, and there is a large cartway to the left with boarded double doors and a wooden lintel.
Inside, the property features chamfered ceiling beams with straight cut steps. The hall fireplace is made of granite jambs and has a reset timber lintel with straight cut steps. On the first floor, there are three 18th century fielded panel doors. The roof structure includes principals with halved and side pegged apices and dovetail lap-jointed collars, along with trenched purlins, one of which may be reused and shows signs of smoke-blackening, possibly from charring.
The small stable at the rear dates from around the 18th century and is built of stone rubble and cob, topped with a half-hipped scantle slate roof. It features a stable door in the end wall with a hay loft door above. The stable is linked to the house by a slate-roofed walk supported on large granite posts.
