Description

The Battery is a Grade II listed magazine and battery built in 1905 for 9.2 inch guns. Constructed from concrete, it features three emplacements, each equipped with rails for gun mountings and steps leading to sunk magazine entrances. The structure includes iron doors and fittings. It is noted for having a complete interior that retains some original machinery, including ammunition hoists. This well-preserved example of a 9.2 inch battery, along with the Lentney Battery, showcases recent advances in military architecture and was designed to accommodate the two principal heavy guns intended to counter the battleships and armoured cruisers of the pre-Dreadnought era.
