Description
Bovisand Harbour and Pier is a harbour and pier built between 1816 and 1824 by John Rennie and Joseph Whidbey, featuring an altered Defence Electric Light (searchlight) emplacement from around 1900.
The structure is made of shale and rubble infill, faced with Oreston limestone blocks and Dartmoor granite corner blocks. The searchlight itself is constructed from concrete and brick.
The harbour and pier are designed in an L-shape, facing north-west, with a short north arm or jetty extending from the demi-round north-west corner. Granite steps provide access down to the water level from the pier. The searchlight emplacement at the north-west corner has undergone significant alterations. Additionally, a late-20th century steel lookout structure attached to the north-west corner is noted as not being of special architectural or historic interest.
