Description
Heather Cottage and Kimberley Nurseries are a house, likely dating from the 17th century, that was subsequently divided into two cottages, probably in the 19th century, with a 20th-century extension added to the rear. The house is constructed of rough cast stone rubble and cob, with an asbestos slate roof featuring gabled ends. There are rendered lateral stacks at the front and back, featuring set-offs, along with a 20th-century stack at the right-hand end. The original plan comprised three rooms and a through passage, with the lower end on the left heated by a front lateral stack, a rear lateral stack serving the hall, and the right-hand inner room initially unheated. Around the 19th century, an outshut was added to the rear of the lower left end, likely when the house was divided; Heather Cottage occupies the lower left end and the passage, while Kimberley Nurseries occupies the hall and inner room. In the 20th century, a two-storey flat-roofed extension was built at the centre of the back. The north front, which is asymmetrical and has four windows, displays two late 19th or 20th-century two-light casements on the first floor with glazing bars, and circa early 20th-century three- and four-light casements on the ground floor for Kimberley Nurseries. Heather Cottage on the left has two late 20th-century first-floor casements, a circa early 20th-century glazed and panelled door to the right, an early 20th-century projecting lateral stack to the left with set-offs, and a tall shaft. The rear features a large 20th-century two-storey flat-roofed extension and an outshut to the right with a slate lean-to roof. The inspection of Kimberley Nurseries (the former hall and inner room) revealed no exposed early features. Heather Cottage (formerly the lower end) is said to contain a concealed cross-beam and a large blocked kitchen fireplace. The roof has straight principal rafters with lapped and pegged collars.
