Description
Higher Collaton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century and was significantly remodeled in the early 19th century. It features plastered rubble walls, which may include some cob, and has a thatched roof that is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right. The building has two brick stacks, one axial and one at the left gable end.
The layout consists of a three-room plan with an entrance stair hall that may have been added in the early 19th century, along with a passage running behind the central room, which was certainly part of the original design. An axial stack serves both the central room and the right-hand room.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with five windows, all of which are early 19th-century 20-pane hornless sashes. To the left of the center, there is a contemporary six-panel door behind a simple open-fronted timber porch. At the right-hand end, there is a lower 19th-century service building addition that connects the house to a small two-storey 19th-century outbuilding, which has a hipped roof and one window on each floor.
Inside, any surviving early features have been concealed by the early 19th-century remodeling, but the house retains very complete joinery from that period, including the staircase, shutters, and doors. This farmhouse is a very attractive traditional building that has remained remarkably untouched by alterations in the current century.
