Description
Higher Collaton Cottage is a house that likely began as a farmhouse in the 17th century and has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The structure features rendered rubble walls, which may include some cob, and has a gable-ended thatch roof. There is a brick stack at the left gable end and an axial rubble stack with a brick shaft. The original plan likely consisted of three rooms with a through-passage, with the lower end on the left and a hall heated by the stack at the higher end. This plan was probably modified in the 20th century when a lean-to was added behind the left-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front. The first floor has three early 20th-century two-light casements in the center, while the rest of the windows are from the mid-20th century. To the left of center, there is a stone porch that is open at the front, dating from the 18th century or earlier, featuring stone seats on either side and a wide 20th-century plank door behind it. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but may include features such as ceiling beams, open fireplaces, and early roof timbers.
