Description

Stancombe Linhays is a Grade II listed structure consisting of cattle shelters and an adjoining pair of cottages, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building is constructed from local stone rubble, with the upper sections of the outside wall featuring cob that is partly clad in corrugated iron. It has a hipped roof made of corrugated iron.

The layout is trapezoidal, comprising a 14-bay single-story cattle shelter arranged around a fold yard. There is a cart entrance located in the lower southeast corner and a wide loading doorway leading into a 4-bay cattle shelter or cartshed on the outer south side, where the ground level is lower. Additionally, there are a pair of one-room plan attached lean-to cottages against the outer south side.

The exterior of the cattle shelters facing the fold yard has open fronts supported by 12 circular, slightly tapered stone rubble piers, though 2 of the original 14 piers are missing. The floors beneath the shelters are cobbled. On the outer south side, the 4-bay open-fronted cattle shelter or cartshed features rectangular stone rubble piers with rounded corners on the inside and a corrugated iron lean-to roof. To the left, there is a roofless pair of attached cottages with a monopitch lean-to roof and tall stone rubble end stacks, with one of the doorways blocked.

The roof structure includes cambered collars that are lapped and pegged to the face of the principals, with halved and pegged apexes. This building is an interesting example of 19th-century agricultural architecture. Although referred to as Stancombe Linhays, it does not conform to the traditional definition of linhays, which typically describes an open-fronted hayloft over a cattle shelter.
