Description
The remains of a private chapel of ease, dated 1683, are located immediately northeast of Painsford Manor. This chapel is a rebuilding of a medieval chapel that was licensed in 1400, constructed by John Kelland of Painsford Manor. The chapel features dressed slate rubble walls and is currently roofless. It likely originally had a rectangular plan as a single cell chapel.
On the south side, facing the manor, there is a round arch doorway made of Beerstone, which includes cyma and ovolo mouldings and a hoodmould, with what appears to have been a keystone. An inscription around the arch is now illegible. To the right of the doorway, there is a small tablet in a moulded frame displaying the Kelland arms and the date 1683. The north wall is more complete and taller, while the east end is now open.
Inside, there are no remaining features. This chapel, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was licensed in 1400 and was rebuilt by John Kelland in the late 17th century, remaining in use until around the middle of the 18th century.
