Description
The outbuilding immediately southeast of Painsford Manor is a 17th-century structure now used as a farm building. It is constructed of dressed slate rubble and features an asbestos slate hipped roof. The building likely originally had a two-room plan, although the partition between the two rooms was added in the 20th century. The right-hand ground floor room to the south is heated by a lateral stack with an oven, while the left-hand ground floor room to the north is unheated and has a doorway at the back for direct entry. The first floor consists of one large room that is now open to the roof, with a lateral fireplace at the front of the left end. The fireplace in the rear lateral stack at the other end appears to be a later alteration. The original purpose of the building is uncertain, but it may be located on or near the site of the proposed southeast wing of Painsford Manor.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window west front. All openings feature finely dressed slate segmented arches, and while the window frames are missing, the left ground floor opening has been converted into a doorway. The rear elevation includes a projecting lateral stack towards the left end, possibly with an oven in the angle, and a finely dressed slate chamfered segmental arch doorway to the right of centre. There are various later openings in the rear wall, including a wide doorway to the right.
Inside, the first-floor fireplace in the front wall of the left end has finely dressed chamfered slate jambs with pyramid stops and a large slate lintel with a hollow-chamfered soffit. The ground floor fireplace in the rear lateral stack to the right is blocked, while the fireplace above features a red brick flat arch. The roof has collars pegged to the face of straight principals.
