Description
House. Dating from the early to mid 17th century, it was later divided into cottages around the 18th or early 19th century, reunited, and extended in the 20th century. The house is constructed of painted stone rubble with a thatched roof, gabled at the higher left end and hipped at the lower right end, with eyebrowed eaves over the first-floor windows at the front. There is a stone rubble gable end stack to the left, featuring slate weathering, and a projecting stone rubble rear lateral stack with set-offs and slate weathering, which has been heightened with a rendered brick shaft. Originally planned with two rooms and a through passage, the lower right-hand room was heated by a lateral stack at the back, above the kitchen, while the hall to the left was heated from the gable end stack. Around the 18th or early 19th century, the house was divided into two cottages, and a second doorway (the present one) was inserted into the front of the hall. In the 20th century, the house was reunited and the original through passage front doorway was blocked. Internal partitions were rearranged and a two-storey wing was built behind the higher left end, with a late 20th-century conservatory added to the lower right end. The south-east front is asymmetrical, featuring closely spaced first-floor windows under the eaves in the centre, and ground-floor windows to the right and left of the doorway, which is to the left of centre. The original passage front doorway to the right of the existing doorway is blocked. Windows are 20th-century 1 and 2-light casements with leaded panes. Features include a 20th-century plank divided door and an open timber porch with a thatched roof. The rear elevation has a large projecting lateral stack to the left with set-offs, a 20th-century plank door to its right, a 20th-century 2-light ground floor casement, and a projecting 20th-century wing to the right. The interior has been significantly altered in the 20th century, with moved partitions and replaced floors. The lower right-hand room has a lateral fireplace at the back with a chamfered timber lintel with straight cut stops and an altered brick-lined oven, with replacement ceiling beams. The higher left-hand room also has replacement ceiling beams and a new lintel to the gable end fireplace. A fireplace in the rear lateral stack on the first floor has an ovolo moulded timber lintel. The roof contains one 17th-century truss with straight principals with halvings for lap-jointed collar. The remainder of the roof truss was replaced, probably in the 18th or 19th century, with collars lapped to the faces of straight principals.
