Description
South Grounds Farmhouse is a farmhouse built around 1835 to 1840, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed from local slate rubble, featuring red brick window jambs and a low-pitched slate hipped roof with deep eaves. The house has rendered side stacks topped with tall red clay pots, and a small rendered stack over the front wall.
The farmhouse has a double depth rectangular plan, consisting of two main front rooms with an entrance to a stair hall located to the right of center. Service rooms are located behind these, including a large kitchen on the left and what was likely the dairy on the right. There is a cellar beneath the front room, accessed via an external doorway on the left side. In the late 20th century, the house underwent restoration, which included widening the entrance hall by moving the partition on the left-hand side.
The exterior features two storeys and a cellar, with an asymmetrical three-window front. The 19th-century windows are 16-pane sashes, some of which have been restored, while the windows to the left of center are 12-pane sashes, all set in openings with flat stone arches. The doorway, located to the right of center, has a panelled grid glazed door and a 20th-century open porch with a hipped slate canopy supported by wooden posts. On the left side, the cellar doorway has a plank door, and to its left, at a higher level, there is a late 20th-century conservatory. The rear elevation features 16-pane sashes, some restored, and a large central stair window from the 20th century, with a porch below.
The interior inspection was limited to the ground floor. Most of the original joinery has been replaced, but the original open well staircase remains, complete with stick balusters and turned newels.
