Description

The Ship in Dock Inn is a public house with accommodation above, located in Dartmouth. A date plaque indicates that a house was originally built here in 1656, but it was rebuilt in 1871. The building is constructed of plastered stone rubble, with the front appearing as ashlar. It features a central axial stack, as well as right end, rear, and front lateral stacks with rendered brick chimneyshafts and pots, all topped with a slate roof.

The inn has a single-depth layout with a four-room plan and stands three storeys high, with a four-window range. The upper floors have sash windows with 4/4 panes. The left two-window section includes stucco hoodmoulds with leafy label stops, and there is a similar one-window section on the left return onto Clarence Street. The main doorway on the left side of the front features a fielded 8-panel door with an overlight and a moulded stucco floating cornice above, while the doorway to the right has a fielded 6-panel door.

At first-floor level, between the two two-window sections, there is a date plaque inscribed with "E." and "E.C." above the date 1656 and the initials "R.N.", followed by "Rebuilt 1871 W.H.N." The roof is gable-ended to the right and hipped to the left, with a broad curve around the corner.

The interior has only been partially inspected, showing that the bars have undergone superficial changes due to 20th-century modernisations. The right-hand house stair features stick balusters, and it is likely that more 19th-century joinery and other features remain on the upper floors.
