Description

Allerton Pottery Barn, located northwest of Lower Allerton Farmhouse, is an early 17th-century barn that was remodeled in the 19th century and converted for domestic use in the late 20th century.

The front wall, rebuilt in the 19th century, is made of local limestone rubble, while the rear wall features a stone rubble lower section with cob above. The barn has a half hipped slate roof. Originally, it was a five-bay threshing barn with the threshing floor in the center bay. In the 19th century, it was extended to the northwest, and a floor was added to create shippons on the ground floor with a loft above.

The exterior includes a barn doorway to the right, with the main roof extending over a later porch that connects to the rear wing of the house. To the left, there are three shippon doorways with segmented stone arches and two ventilation slits above. At the rear, the barn doorway features a shouldered head that may date back to the 16th century, and roof lights have been added.

Inside, the barn retains two 17th-century trusses, with principal rafters that have short cranked feet and one with straight feet, along with threaded purlins and cranked collards. The remaining trusses are from the 19th century.

Allerton Pottery Barn is designated for its architectural interest, historical significance, and group value, as it is an important part of the agricultural development of the area and complements the attached 16th-century Lower Allerton Farmhouse.
