Description
The former stables, located approximately 60 metres north west of Lyneham House, are a Grade II* listed structure. This stable range is now a roofless ruin that contains 20th-century sheds built inside. It may have originally been a barn or converted into stables. The building dates from around the 18th century and incorporates materials from the 16th century, with some of the main fabric possibly being from that earlier period. Constructed from slate rubble with granite details, the structure is rectangular in plan. The walls at the north end and north west side have been reduced.
On the east side, there is a large, likely reused, granite doorway featuring a moulded round arch, although the roll moulded jambs do not match the arch. Ventilation slits are present on the east side. The south end of the building was probably constructed around 1700, contemporary with the house, and is distinguished by rusticated granite quoins, bond, two storeys, three bays, four reused moulded granite window frames, and a central granite doorway. This doorway has a four-centred arch with a keystone, a pulvinated frieze, a scrolled open pediment, and Ionic half columns.
