Description
Kittery Court is a detached house located on the edge of the River Dart estuary. The main part of the house dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, with extensions and remodelling occurring in the mid-19th century. There is also an earlier wing, likely dating back to around 1717, built by John Fownes of Nethway House. The exterior of the main house is stuccoed, with a bitumenised slate roof featuring gabled and hipped ends, and paired brackets to the eaves soffit. It is three storeys high, with four bays in the main section, which originally had sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor has tripartite sashes, the centre first floor and second floor windows have been replaced with casements. All windows have louvred shutters. A central glazed door with side lights is set within a 20th-century semi-circular porch supported by columns. A mid-19th-century one-bay extension is located to the right (south) side, featuring two-storeyed bay windows. The early 18th-century north wing is constructed from partly stuccoed stone rubble and has a gabled and hipped bitumenised slate roof. It is lower in height, with two storeys and an attic, and features casement windows. A section of stone rubble garden wall adjoins the north west side and includes an 18th-century brick round arch doorway with a keystone, and moulded stone imposts and bases to the responds.
