Description
Apple Cottage is a farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages. It likely dates from the early 16th century, with possible alterations including the insertion of a hall floor in the 17th century and remodeling in the 18th century. The building is constructed of colour-washed stone rubble and features a bitumenised scantle slate hipped roof with heightened eaves, while the south end has asbestos slates. At the rear, there is a large rendered lateral stack with set-offs and an over. The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage plan, with an oriel hall stack backing onto the former through passage and a lateral stack at the rear of the lower (kitchen) end. There is an unheated inner room, and the through passage screen to the kitchen has been removed, with the front door now blocked and replaced by a window. A 20th-century outshut is located at the rear, along with a lean-to at the lower end. The building is two storeys high and has a five-window range, featuring late 18th and early 19th century three and four-light casements, some with glazing bars and wooden lintels. The right-hand side has a plank door with a stone lintel, while the left side has a glazed door and a 20th-century glazed porch.
Inside, the hall appears to have an internal jetty at the inner end, with the jetty beam boxed in. The main hall beam is also boxed in, and there are step stop-chamfered joists. The inner room features step stop-chamfered joists, a square section beam, and much reused timber in the ceiling. The lower end has roughly chamfered ceiling beams. The roof over the hall and higher end has side-pegged lap-jointed trusses, while the roof over the lower end has softwood principals with side-pegged lapped collars.
