Description

Greystone Cottage and Higher Stadbury Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century and late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed slate-stone and features slate roofs with clay ridges. The original structure is a three-room cross-passage design with a rear staircase, to which a wing has been added at the right end, creating an L-plan. The building has two storeys and a five-window south front. The ground floor includes a plank door and a two-light window with horizontal bars leading to the cottage, followed by a two-light glazing bar casement. There is a 20th-century hipped porch over 20th-century glazed doors, and two tripartite sashes with 4:12:4 panes. On the first floor, there are two two-light glazing bar casements and two 12-pane sashes. The left gable features a small stack, while a large stone ridge stack has been raised in bricks. The return wing has 20th-century glazed doors and a tripartite sash beneath two 12-pane sashes, with a plain gable. The rear of the building has a swept-down roof and various casements, with the outer face of the wing displaying a two-light glazing bar casement and a large buttress or former stack.

Inside, the main block contains a series of transverse 16th-century moulded beams, many 18th-century panelled doors, and a large fireplace in the middle room with a deep flat granite lintel. A spiral staircase is located in a turret, accessed through an arched doorway with a keystone and an 18th-century door, featuring a moulded mop-stick handrail. The top room on the left has an 18th-century fire surround with a moulded support for the mantelshelf. The later wing, which has higher ceilings, includes elliptical recesses with pilasters, some panelling, and a moulded cornice. The roof features A-frames, cambered collars, and butt purlins.
