Description

Stone Lodge and Threshers Barn, formerly the barn situated 20 metres southwest of East Leigh Farmhouse, is an 18th-century bank barn converted into two residential dwellings, with 19th and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of slate rubble with red brick detailing, and has a modern slate roof. The rectangular barn is built into a bank at its northwestern end. It is now divided into two dwellings, accessed via the northwestern gable elevation at first-floor level and the southwestern elevation at ground-floor level.

The southwestern elevation features five window openings on both the first and ground floors, all containing modern casement windows. To the southeast of this elevation are large openings on both ground and first floors, separated by red brick voussoirs. The northeastern elevation, facing the courtyard fronting East Leigh Farmhouse, includes three openings with timber plank doors and brick arches, alongside a narrow ventilation shaft at first-floor level, now filled with concrete blocks.

During an inspection in 2009, the northwestern dwelling was seen to be entirely plastered and painted internally, retaining a nailed scissor-truss roof. The barn at East Leigh Farmhouse dates to the 18th century with 19th-century alterations and was converted into residential dwellings around 1996-7. An 1886 Ordnance Survey map shows East Leigh Farmhouse to the northeast of the barn, with smaller structures attached to the north and south façades; the northern structure has been demolished, but the southern one remains.

The building is designated at Grade II for being a good example of a South Hams bank barn from the 18th century, for retaining fabric of that date on its northeastern elevation, and for its continued legibility as a bank barn despite its conversion to residential use.
