Description

The lock-up, located immediately north of the Old Forge Guest House in Totnes, is a small single-cell building likely dating from the 18th or early 19th century. Constructed from local limestone and slate rubble, it features a barrel-vaulted roof made of stone rubble, which is now covered in mass concrete, possibly replacing the original slate roofing. The structure is designed as a lean-to that adjoins the back of a cart-shed, with a visible straight masonry joint between the two buildings at the upper level.

On the south front, there is a doorway on the left side, with the original lintel replaced by a concrete one. An iron grille door is intended to be reinstated. To the right of the doorway, there is a rectangular window opening framed in stone. The sandstone jambs of the window have been reused and are hollow-chamfered with glazing grooves. The sandstone lintel has been roughly chamfered to match, and the granite cill is also chamfered. The window is fitted with iron bars but lacks glazing. This lock-up is depicted on Elliot's map of Bridgetown from 1825, which indicates that the house and smithy to the south did not exist at that time.
