Description
Shilston Barton is a large farmhouse, primarily dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with one room featuring 17th-century paneling from an earlier house. The building is constructed of rubble, with some rendering on a 20th-century extension, and has slate roofs. It has a main L-plan layout, with a longer arm extending to the east and a lower infill at the internal angle. The symmetrical south front is two storeys high and features three windows, all of which are 12-pane sashes, with larger windows on the ground floor and a central pair of French doors that served as the entrance before modifications to the 20th-century wing. There is a first-floor plat band that returns to the left end, with two blocked openings. The roof is hipped, and there are two large stacks at the back eaves.
The right return of the building has five windows, mainly 12-pane sashes, but the central ground-floor window has an arched head, a two-light casement, and radial bars. The entrance front to the west is from the 20th century, featuring two 12-pane sashes and a part-glazed door set within a 19th-century pilaster surround with an arch and pediment. The top gable end is plain, and to the left of the entrance is a large external stack with a bell set into a pentice roof at eaves level.
Inside, the ground floor has window shutters and various early 19th-century doors. The large parlour in the southeast corner has enriched 17th-century panelling with a continuous frieze, which was brought in from a former house on the site. The fireplace wall features 20th-century facsimile panelling and a roll-mould granite fire surround, likely also from the previous house. Another fireplace has a bolection mould surround and a carved overmantel. The bell is thought to have been a time-keeper for the 19th-century farmhands. The earlier house was owned by Thomas Savery, who played a significant role in the development of steam power alongside Newcomen at Dartmouth.
