Description
Free Hamlet is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with a wing added around the 17th or 18th century. The building is constructed of roughcast stone rubble and features a slurried scantle slate roof that is both hipped and gable-ended, forming an L-shape in plan. The 17th or 18th century south wing is two stories high and has three windows, which are fitted with sashes that include glazing bars. To the right of the center, there is a glazed door.
At the rear, the 16th century wing has a large rendered chimney stack at the gable end, along with another rendered chimney stack on the side wall that has a moulded granite cap. There is a nail-studded door beside the stack, framed by a moulded wooden door frame, and another moulded door frame is located at the opposite end of the cross passage.
Inside, the lower end of the northwest wing features jointed cruck trusses and a massive chamfered ceiling beam. The ground floor room at the higher end of the northwest wing showcases early 18th century fielded panelling, complete with an overmantel that is flanked by round-headed niches with fluted pilasters.
