Description

Gatcombe Bridge is a road viaduct that spans the valley of Gatcombe Brook. It was built in the early to mid 19th century. The bridge features solid stone rubble walls that are pierced by tall round arches made of dressed stone, with buttresses that have set-offs between the arches. The parapets are capped with stone rubble in a saddle-back style and end in squat piers. Although the turnpike is indicated on Benjamin Donn's 1765 map of Devon, this bridge serves as a 19th-century replacement.
