Description

The Maltster's Arms Public House is a building that may have originally been two pairs of cottages, dating from the early to mid-19th century, with a 20th-century addition and internal alterations. It is constructed of painted local stone rubble with rendered gable ends and features an asbestos slate roof with gabled ends. The gable end stacks have tapered shafts with slate weathering.

The building has a long rectangular shape and is two storeys high, with two storeys of cellars that have access at the back to a quay, which is at a much lower level than the road at the front. The ground floor layout has been completely altered in the 20th century to create bars for the public house, and there is a three-storey extension at the back.

On the exterior, the front facing the road is symmetrical with four windows, showcasing early to mid-19th century 16-pane sash windows with segmented brick arches and slate sills. The first-floor right-hand window has been changed to a four-pane sash. The walls beside the ground floor windows are rebated to accommodate boarded window shutters. There are two doorways, each with a 19th-century six-panel door located to the left and right of the center, both featuring slated canopies, although the right-hand canopy is a replacement. A single-storey lean-to outshut is present at the left end. The 20th-century extensions at the back include stone rubble on the left and rendered material on the right, where the lower ground storey is open, revealing the back wall of the original building with its old cellar doorway.

Only the ground floor was inspected, which has been entirely rearranged to accommodate public house bars and a restaurant.
