Description
Hill Quay Cottage is a lime-burner's cottage located on the Sharpham estate, dating from around the mid-19th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble with red brick dressings and features a steeply pitched asbestos slate roof adorned with ornate scalloped bargeboards. The cottage has a symmetrical layout with two rooms and a central entrance, flanked by small single-storey outhouses at either end. In the 20th century, the right-hand outhouse was converted into a kitchen, and a single-storey bathroom extension was added at the back.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical two-window arrangement. The first-floor windows are set in small gables, also featuring ornate scalloped bargeboards. The original two-light windows have leaded panes, with one light of each window fitted with iron casements. All windows have segmental red brick arches. The cottage has a 20th-century plank door, and its original porch has been replaced by a verandah that spans the entire width of the house, including the outhouses. The outhouses have gable-ended roofs and late 20th-century plank doors. At the rear, there is a single-storey flat-roof extension added in the 20th century. The interior was not inspected.
