Description

Rockdale is a house dating to circa 1824. It is constructed of stuccoed stone with a low-pitched slate hipped roof featuring oversailing eaves and paired brackets to the soffit. The house has two storeys and three bays. A central pedimented gable incorporates a round-arched recess with pilasters. Pairs of pilasters are located at either end of the facade. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set in double and recessed openings, with the centre first-floor window featuring a segmental head. The central doorway is round-headed, featuring pilasters, a cornice, and wreaths in the spandrels. Above the door is a large semi-circular fanlight, which incorporates a smaller rectangular fanlight with a diamond and foiled pane, and an anthemion motif in the frieze. The doorway is flanked by two-panel doors. A two-storey canted bay is present on the right-hand return. The interior is noted for its good contemporary design, including a vaulted hall, a geometrical staircase, moulded plasterwork, and doorcases with doorcases featuring Egyptian eared architraves. The house may have been designed by John Foulston.
