Description
Lower Twitchen is a house that likely has an 18th-century core and was remodeled around 1820-1830. It features painted rendered stone rubble and an asbestos slate roof with gable end rendered stacks. The building has a nearly symmetrical layout with a two-room central stairhall plan and 1.5-storey outshuts added to each side of the rear staircase window. In the 19th century, the house was refurbished, incorporating an 18th-century doorcase that was probably sourced from another location, a geometrical staircase, and high-quality internal joinery.
The house stands two storeys tall and has a three-window range that is symmetrical. The 20th-century windows are two-light casements with six panes per light. The central doorcase, which is early 18th-century, features Ionic fluted columns and an entablature that breaks back from the columns. It has a raised and fielded six-panelled door with a panelled surround, indicating that both the door and doorcase were likely relocated. At the rear, there is a segmental arched stair window with intersecting glazing bars.
Inside, the geometrical staircase has a wreathed handrail and stick balusters. The left-hand room fireplace features a slightly cambered timber lintel and includes a bread oven. The right-hand room showcases good 19th-century joinery, including panelled doors and integral cupboards. The doorcases on the stair landing to the left side are decorated with an incised Greek key motif.
