Description

Emmanuel Church is a Methodist Church built between 1899 and 1900 by WH Gould of Ilfracombe. It is constructed from squared local Plaistow stone rubble, with Bath stone dressings, and features a tiled roof with pierced crested ridge tiles. The main body of the church runs east-west, with gabled projections on the north and south sides—three on the south and two on the north. At the west end of the north front, facing Wilder Road, there is a square tower topped with a spire. Entrance porches are located at the east end of both the north and south sides, as well as attached to the western projection on the south side. The church is situated at first floor level, with a Sunday School beneath.

The exterior is designed in the Early English style, characterized by lancet windows and angle buttresses. The east gable features a more elaborate five-light window with a pointed arch, where the outer lights are paired under a single pointed arch, topped with a trefoiled light. The entire window has a circular light at the top enclosing four trefoiled lights. The front gable windows and the main window in the west gable consist of two lights with a round light above that encloses four smaller round lights. The windows are filled with coloured glass in small square leaded panes, except for the east window, which depicts figures in coloured glass. The tower is divided into three stages, with the narrower third stage featuring pinnacled, octagonal angle turrets. The spire is octagonal in shape and includes gablets on its sides. At the center of the main roof, there is a leaded fleche, which is square in section and diagonally set, with a pointed roof and patterned rib work at both the base and the roof.

The interior has not been inspected. The site where the church stands was previously occupied by Ilfracombe cattle market.
