Description

This listing describes a group of 8 headstones and 6 footstones located approximately 1 to 6 metres southeast of the southeast corner of the south porch of the Church of St. Peter in Berrynarbor. The headstones date from the early 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of slate, featuring a nowy-arched design unless otherwise noted.

Among the headstones is one for John Knill, who died in 1792, along with a headstone for his son. There is also a headstone for Grace Knill, who died in 1708, accompanied by a footstone that displays scrolling foliage. Another footstone, which is straight-headed, features the verse: "My loving wife she leading me ye way/To this dark Bed of Dust, I came to lay," among other inscriptions.

Additional headstones include one for John Slocombe, who died in 1810, adorned with urns flanking an angel's bust at the top, and a headstone for Elizabeth Toms, also featuring an angel's bust. There is a footstone with a verse located to the north of Elizabeth Toms' headstone. Other notable headstones include those for Thomas Clark, who died in 1709; the wife of John Lerwill, who died in 1792; Thomas Toms, who died in 1786; and James Toms, who died in 1815, which is straight-headed and has incised Corinthian-style fluted pilasters flanking the inscription. The group also includes three footstones in a line, with the left-hand stone featuring an incised skull at the top and the right side displaying urns flanking a skull.
