Description

This laundry, together with a wash house and servants' accommodation, was likely built in the mid-18th century, coinciding with the construction of King’s Nympton Park. It is built of local stone rubble with dressed stone quoins, and has red brick and cement dressings, all under a hipped slate roof. A large ashlar chimney stack, positioned centrally, rises through the roof and is distinguished by a chamfered cornice and plinth.

The building is rectangular in plan, incorporating three main rooms; a wash house to the left, entered directly from the front, a room to the right accessed via a cross-passage, and a third room located behind the central stack. Staircases are situated at the rear – one in the upper corner to the right, the other behind the wash house.

The symmetrical front facade features four windows spaced widely at the centre. The windows are original, with thick glazing bars; 9-pane sashes flank the centre, while the first floor has four original horizontally pivoting windows with six panes each. All openings are framed by red brick flat arches and jambs; original 6-panel doors are present to the left and right. The parapet rises slightly at the centre, terminating in a moulded cement cornice and string. The rear elevation is asymmetrical, displaying 19th-century 3-light casements and a plank door. The west end reveals an 18th-century 2-light cross mullion transom window at ground level, a 19th-century 3-light window above, and blocked openings to the right. The east elevation is symmetrical, with blocked windows; the ground floor sashes retain their original 9 panes and thick glazing bars, while the first floor right-hand window retains its original 6-pane horizontal pivoting design with thick glazing bars.

Inside, the wash house contains two large coppers, one especially large and set into three arched recesses within the central stack. The right-hand room and the back room also feature fireplaces within the main stack.
