Description
Water Meadow is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, with stables and barns attached. It has origins dating back to the 17th century and was extended and remodeled in the 20th century when the stables and barns were converted. The building features whitewashed rendered rubble and some cob, topped with a slate roof that is hipped at the right end, while the rear has tiled roofs. There is a rubble stack at the left end.
The layout is a three-sided courtyard plan, with a connecting rubble wall and outbuildings on the fourth side. The original dwelling is L-shaped, forming part of the main front range on the left side and a right-angled extension at the rear. The right side of the main front range and the right-angled extension now include the converted stables and barn, which are part of the dwelling.
The house is two storeys high and features a four-window range. On the left, there are two 2-light casements, each with four panes, and to the right, there are two 3-light casements, each with six panes, above a 3-light casement that flanks a 2-light casement and a rubble porch with a gabled tiled roof. The 17th-century inner doorway has an ovolo-moulded and stopped surround, complete with a ledged plank door that has cover strips and square-headed nails. There is also a plank door at the right end with a small window to the right.
In the inner courtyard, the left side wall has two 2-light casements above a 3-light casement, all featuring early 19th-century fenestration. An ovolo-moulded beam is present in the front room, along with old plank doors that may have been reset. Part of the original roof remains in the right-angled extension of the original dwelling, featuring one truss with a diagonally threaded ridge purlin and a single set of threaded purlins.
