Description
The Yeo Dale Hotel, formerly known as No. 124 Yeo Vale, is located on Pilton Street in Barnstaple. This building features a mid-19th century front block and a rear wing that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. The exterior has solid rendered walls, with the right side of the rear section slate-hung, and a slated roof. There are rendered chimneys on each side wall.
The hotel is three storeys high and has a three-window range. The ground storey displays horizontal channelling and round-arched openings with bearded heads on the keystones. The right-hand opening contains a three-panelled door, and the windows below have sunk panels beneath them. The second-storey windows are adorned with bead-moulded surrounds and cornices on consoles, with the central window featuring a triangular pediment. In front of these windows is a balcony with ornate, ogee-profiled iron railing. The third-storey windows are segmental-headed with moulded architraves and bracketed cills. The ground storey has plain sashes, while the third storey has two-paned sashes, and the second storey features three-paned wood French windows with transom-lights. A prominent bracketed eaves cornice completes the facade.
The interior has not been inspected, but the inner front door is designed like a Venetian window with coloured and patterned leaded glass. Historical records from 1973 mention that deeds from 1668 refer to the rear portion of the building, which includes large beams in the ground floor room. The facade is considered fine and prominent, reflecting its mid-19th century design.
