Description

The stable block, along with its attached courtyard entrance gatepiers and flanking walls, dates from the early 18th century and is located approximately 20 metres east of Hudscott House. The structure is built from unrendered stone rubble, while the gatepiers, flanking walls, and the left end of the stables are faced in Flemish bond brickwork, creating an impressive entrance. The roof is slate, hipped at the left end and gabled at the right.

The stable block has a long rectangular plan that includes a coach-house at the left end, with stables on either side of a tack room to the right. The entrance gatepiers and flanking walls extend at right angles from the front left end of the stable block, connecting it to the Coachman's House on the right, forming a cohesive courtyard range. The stable block features a large segmental-arched entrance to the coach house at the front left end. The courtyard front has wide full-height plank doors to the left of another plank door, along with a six-window range. The three windows towards the left end have two-light small-paned and partially louvred casements. Inside, 19th-century stable fittings remain intact, including decorative cast iron grilles for the loose boxes. The front courtyard walls slope down on each side to the square-section gatepiers, which have moulded brick plinths.
