Description

Winson Cross is a cross, cross-shaft, and base located in Chittlehampton. The cross and shaft likely date from the late medieval period, while the base is from the 18th century. The cross is made of granite and features a Latin patee shape with a moulded string course below. It stands on a tall octagonal pedestal that has a timber moulded cornice, and is supported by a stepped stone rubble plinth. This cross is prominently positioned at the junction of the B3227 and the road leading to Chittlehampton village. The ancient cross was mounted on its pedestal by Denys Rolls, who died in 1797, of Hudscott.
