Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory, now a private dwelling, dating to approximately 1820-30. It is constructed of stuccoed stone rubble, possibly with some cob. The roof is slate, with bracketted eaves and rendered stacks. The building is virtually square, with a double-depth main range and a U-shaped plan created by two short, gabled rear wings. A single-storey extension, with a hipped roof, adjoins the left end.

The main facade has three windows and two storeys, with an attic. The windows are 19th-century sashes. A flat-roofed porch, likely added in the late 19th century but altered in the late 20th century with patterned glazing bars to the outer doors and panelled inner walls and ceiling, is centrally positioned. The inner doorway has panelled reveals and a half-glazed door of two leaves. Ground floor windows have bracketted timber hoods, one of which was removed during a survey. A small, flat-roofed attic dormer is located on the left side. The rear elevation retains its original 19th-century windows. An ogee roof covers a bell turret, centrally positioned at the rear of the main range between the two service wings, containing a bell.

The interior remains largely unspoiled. A geometrical staircase features a wreathed handrail and stick balusters. Principal rooms have moulded plaster cornices and ceiling roses, pedimented doorcases, and six-panelled doors. A marble chimneypiece is flanked by alcoves in the right-hand room. The central passage has a flagstone floor. Original 19th-century joinery is present throughout the building.
