Description

Rackenford Manor is a large house dating from the 18th century, which was enlarged and had its interior remodelled between 1928 and 1932 by Allan Walton. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features hipped slate roofs, with two rendered axial stacks and gable end stacks on the rear wings.

The original layout consists of a central symmetrical five-bay range, with two principal rooms on each side of the entrance hall. There is a stair projection at the rear right end and a service wing at the rear left end. During the 1928-32 renovations, the rear service wing was extended, and two shallow projecting wings were added. The larger right-hand wing includes a second entrance on its outer face.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a central five-bay symmetrical design and shallow projecting wings at each end. The original core features 16-paned sash windows, with the central sash being semi-circular arched and having intersecting glazing bars. The ground floor has 8 over 12 paned sashes. A central portico in the Tuscan style, complete with a pediment and interrupted entablature, is supported by Tuscan columns. The doorway has a panelled soffit and reveals, along with a fanlight and a 20th-century door.

The left-hand wing has a 16-paned sash window above a large segmental arched opening with recessed French windows. The right-hand wing features one sash window above two 16-paned sashes, with a porch added during the 1930s remodelling, which includes a shallow bow window to the right. Many of the semi-circular arched sash windows at the rear remain intact, including a window in the stairwell. The interior was entirely remodelled by Allan Walton during the 1928-32 renovations.
