Description
The balustrade, steps, retaining wall, and grotto located approximately 3 metres south of Chulmleigh Rectory are likely from the early 19th century. They are constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings. The stone retaining wall features a balustraded stone parapet that projects forward at the center, creating a semi-circular arched deep grotto, with a flight of stone steps on each side. To the left of the left-hand flight, there is another semi-circular arched opening in the retaining wall that leads to a second grotto, which has a narrow lancet to the left. The front grotto is partly lined with large limestone fossils. The steps and parapet are adorned with short rounded stone balusters, moulded stone handrails, and low ashlar piers at regular intervals, which have square sections, panelled sides, and ball finials.
